Insert Credits: A Guide to Buying Games this Holiday
The holidays are coming and that means crazy packs of people itching for the best deals on the newest stuff. As with everything else, there is a high volume of video games to pick and choose from, but not all of them are worth your money. This guide can help you be a smart shopper and get more bang for your buck out of your games and consoles.
Games Worth Your Time and Money:
Overwatch ($59.99)
(available on PS4, Xbox One and PC, Rated T)
This almost seems like a gimme, but Overwatch is fantastic. Seamlessly transitioning you from match to match and constantly changing up the game types, this shooter makes playing easy and fun. There are 23 heroes to pick from, all of who fall into the categories of assault, defense, tank and healer classes. Fast paced, friendly and fun, Overwatch packs all the punch of the big name shooters into one convenient package.
Titanfall 2 ($59.99)
(available on PS4, Xbox One and PC, Rated M)
Building on the foundation of the excellent multiplayer found in the first game, Respawn Entertainment brings the joy of calling a gigantic, robot war machine from the sky to all platforms. On top of that, the player is given an amazing campaign experience, with an engaging story and an excellent combination of platforming and first-person shooter action, something that was missing entirely from the first game.
Battlefield 1 ($59.99)
(available on PS4, Xbox One and PC, Rated M)
Finally giving the Battlefield series the soul it has been lacking for years in terms of its single player campaign, Battlefield 1 bring one of humanity’s greatest atrocities to the video game world. Reinventing the veteran franchise in ways we haven’t seen since Battlefield 2 pushed the franchise out of World War II into the modern day, Battlefield 1 takes it’s name from the war it’s based on, World War I. Using World War 1 technology and weaponry makes for a calculated use precision and skill, leaving little room for error, but a whole lot of room for improvement.
Dishonored 2 ($59.99)
(available on PS4, Xbox One and PC, Rated M)
Given the massive success of the sleeper hit of 2012, Dishonored 2 picks up right where it’s predecessor left off, but gives you the ability to now play as Emily Kaldwin or series protagonist Corvo Attano. Each with their own unique skill set and magical abilities, players still have the massive open world to play in and the ability to tackle any objective anyway they wish.
Final Fantasy 15 ($59.99)
(available on PS4, Xbox One and PC, Rated T)
Having started its life cycle as Final Fantasy Versus XIII ten years ago in 2006, the project was eventually rebranded in 2012 as the fifteenth installment in the main Final Fantasy series. Major changes to the series include an action oriented combat system, as opposed to the turn based variations that are staples of the franchise, an open world concept that allows you to drive across it and a realistic, dynamic weather system and day and night cycle. Set up as a buddy quest, the story follows Prince Noctis and his companions on their quest to retake their land from the evil Niflheim empire. Surely a reinvention of the series, this game looks to restore the franchise to it’s former glory after a string of shoddy releases.
Rise of the Tomb Raider ($59.99)
(available on PS4, Xbox One and PC, Rated M)
Taking place after the story of the hugely successful series reboot in 2013, Rise of the Tomb Raider continues the adventures of Lara Croft, now not so young and naive an explorer as she was in the first game. Taking place in Siberia, the game puts players in control of Lara Croft as she battle a paramilitary organization to the legendary city of Kitezh, which is supposedly harboring the secrets to immortality. With an engaging but simple to use crafting system, fun platforming and challenging optional tombs to search through and solve, this is a game to not miss.
There are many other games to spend money on this year, but these are top contenders for holiday must buys this year. Get your wallets ready, these games are bound to fly off shelves.
