Catching a ‘break’ with VH1’s new series
Written and directed by Seith Mann, VH1 recently presented fans with a TV series “The Breaks.” He got inspiration off the book “The Big Payback,” written by journalist Dan Charnas and continued the series based off its original film. Furthermore, Gary Giudice produced the series and legendary DJ Premier produced the music. The setting takes place in Brooklyn, New York during the early 90s’. This was during raps “Golden Age.” Unfortunately Hip-Hop was deemed an unaccepted genre by America at this time due to its acclaimed heighten in crime and violence.
The TV series includes actor Wood Harris, (Remember the Titans) playing the role of Barry Fouray. Famous rapper/actor, Method Man (Wu-Tang Clan) stars in the series, playing the father of DeVee (Tristan Mack Wilds), who is a self-taught producer trying to find the next big rapper. Also actress Afton Williamson, playing the role of Nikki Jones, makes the courageous choice of quitting school and pursuing her dream of being a record executive with her boyfriend David, who works at an R&B radio station. The story follows the difficult but fulfilling journey of the three friends passion for Hip-Hop, who are trying to make their way into the music industry. They demonstrate the challenges and sacrifices one has to make of wanting to be in this field. Moreover, it informs the audience of how corrupt and strict the music industry could be.
