Dyslexia Doesn’t Stop Me
There are students that go to Citrus College who may have special needs. Some disorders like autism, blindness, loss of hearing may create difficulties with learning. Personally, I struggle with dyslexia.
To make my learning easier for me, there’s a department on campus called Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) that helps students like me learn to the best of their capability.
Ever since starting at Citrus, I went right into the DSPS program and right off the bat, they were welcoming. They showed me different kinds of tools and strategies that I would have never expected to help me. This program build yourself up for success in the future as you work with them through your school experience.
When I ask certain questions that I generally don’t understand, they clarify to me that the questions I ask are very common for a student starting their journey in school that is also dealing with dyslexia. I realized that the counselors in the program genuinely care about what they see in you and where they want you be in the future.
I had a counselor that was explaining to me the details of how to register and how to keep up with my grades. These counselors are good at their job and love what they do. This program makes sure that you are in control and establishing yourself as a functioning human being in the future and society. They will message you and make sure everything is going smoothly like making sure your paperwork is correct and you’re on task with your assignments. Another great opportunity with DSPS is if I need extra time on test it is accommodated. They do check-ins like asking how you feel about your classes and if you like where you are.
Because of DSPS, I am able to continue my journey in college and into my future without letting my dyslexia get in the way.
