Sweet Treats
Scoop Street
by Angelina Oliva
Craving a refreshing scoop of ice cream or a cozy funnel cake? Scoop street is the place to go. There are a variety of options of ice-cream flavors and combinations. The most popular items are the Strawberries N’ Cream funnel cake and Cookies N’ Cream funnel cake.
The Strawberries N’ Cream was customized to add a scoop of strawberry cheesecake ice-cream, it typically is served without ice cream. A layer of fresh strawberries is placed in between the funnel cake and ice cream. This certainly leaned on the sweeter side but with the addition of ice-cream it leveled out the sweet factor. I recommend having a drink to help wash all of the sweetness down.
The Churro Chara is served with sea salt caramel ice-cream. There were bite sized churros adorned throughout the plate. A drizzle of caramel covered the entirety of the ice-cream and funnel cake. This treat was well balanced with sweetness and saltiness.
The Cookies N’ Cream is covered in oreos and chocolate syrup. For all the chocolate lovers out there, this treat is for you. The chocolate and cream still balance each other nicely.
Serving sizes are large. There are two sizes, individual and shareable. I would argue that the individual size could still be shared between a couple of people. These large sizes can correspond to the steeper prices of these treats. You will certainly get enough bang for your buck. Funnel cakes are served freshly hot with a crisp outside yet fluffy inside. The freezing cold ice cream makes a pleasant juxtaposition.
Scoop street is the next door neighbor to Bun Street, which you can check out on our last issue. Convenient placement can have you grab a yummy burger and treat yourself to a sweet treat afterward.
Churro Boss
by Blanca Carrasco
Churro Boss is Killer Good
Women-owned business, Churro Boss, is no amateur when it comes to desserts. With their Churro Box, ice cream, and freshly made espresso, they have been domi nating Downtown Covina since 2016.
Located on N. Citrus Ave., Churro Boss stuns with their amazing outdoor displays that resemble Dia De Los Muertos art. They used to sell their amazing desserts in once a catering truck now turned into a killer good dessert shop.
When you walk in, you get the fresh smell of yummy churros as well as the sight of the beautiful decor. Also matching the theme, they have many spooky decorations, and their dark sleek working and dining area.
Their Churro Split was to die for and their Iced Pumpkin Latte was exquisite. Especially with ice creams like Pistachio, Strawberry Cheesecake, and Chocolate Brownie Walnut. The Churros were soft on the inside with a great crunch on the outside topped with sweet cinnamon sugar.
They do offer a variety of ice cream flavors and customers could customize both their ice cream and churros with their yummy toppings. The Peanut Butter Mutter Flutter was super thick and creamy with just the right amount of peanut butter to ice cream ratio with amazing bits of peanut butter cups mixed in.
Their customer service was excellent and they are very attentive to their customers’ needs. The owner, Alejandra Gastelum was actively working and creating wonderful conversations with returning customers. Her mother, an employee, is the prototype to Alejandra’s wonderful personality. They make a wonderful team.
Overall, if you are looking for a quick dessert that is both killer good and offers a friendly environment, this place is for you.
21 Choices
by Fritz Kreimann
21 Choices is a small chain of frozen yogurt shops. They only have three locations, two in Claremont down the street from each other and one in Pasadena.
We with making all of their flavors in store. Each day there is a new menu. There are 21 different flavors and combinations, new ones are added all the time.
The store is pretty cute. They display all their ingredients behind the counter and some racks showing the bigger ones. It’s charming. It feels very welcoming and the employee was the nicest and so friendly.
Everything is based on vanilla. They create the flavor of your choice in front of you, it’s so cool to see them do that.
Rocky road is always an easy choice to make, can’t go wrong with that. It’s so much chocolate but that’s why it’s so good. You can always add extra toppings for a small fee. I added some gummy bears. The chocolate was so rich, and the marshmallows and nuts add some nice flavor and texture to it.
Another flavor they had was called the Saturday Morning Cartoon. It’s vanilla but has fruity pebbles, marshmallows and strawberries mixed in. It tastes just like cereal, which I really enjoyed as a big cereal head. The strawberries they used were so fresh and sweet, I should’ve asked for more.
Prices are pretty reasonable. It starts at $8 for a small cup, but they give you a lot in that cup. There was easily about three scoops worth in that cup. Maybe even too much.
It’s softer than regular ice cream, but it feels like it has the same consistency. It tastes just like it too. Going to some of the other big frozen yogurt chains never hits the same. 21 Choices is the best choice if you’re looking for a tasty sweet treat.
Mochi Lion
by Shugey Loza
Pink, Pink, Pink!!! Mochi Lion is a family business that opened their second location just this year. Their location in Covina is a pastel paradise. The pink chairs, tables, and pink walls create a cutesy vibe matched by the beautiful view of Civic Center Park just outside.
Their mochi donuts are super imaginative and chewy. With flavors like Fruity Pebbles, strawberry Pocky, M&Ms, and more, they have something for everyone. These treats are the sweetest, and they even come in small bite-sized balls.
If chewy denser treats are too filling, their malasadas are to die for. They are light and fluffy, and they have many fillings to choose from. Make sure to eat it from the side it’s filled from otherwise it can be a bit messy.
Their savory treats are a hit too. Their Korean corn dogs come in three different flavors and fillings like potato, Hot Cheeto, original, full cheese, full hotdog, and half and half. The cheese pull is insane and the hot dog is very juicy. They make them fresh, so it’s a wait, but well worth it.
The employees are helpful and willing to accommodate their customers’ drink preferences. Whether a customer asks for their drink to be sweeter, stronger, or if they have the very specific request of putting lychee in their coffee, they will accommodate.
Rev’d Up
by Alexa Tapia
Rev’d Up Coffee & Classics has two locations. One in Claremont and one in Glendora. The Glendora location at 209 N Glendora Ave is in the downtown area among several coffee shops, but they stand out.
The name of their shop lives up to expectations and beyond. It’s not only the delicious coffee that gets you going.
The interior is uniquely decorated with actual motorcycles and motorcycle memorabilia. The establishment is definitely a motorcycle enthusiast’s dream. The shop is illuminated with dim romantic lighting, that combined with the interior design and the smell of freshly brewed coffee gives an immaculate vibe. It is like a dive bar meets a cute small town cafe.
Their extraordinary interior matches perfectly with their fall menu. The menu is a fun and creative spin on coffee and tea classics that enhance your fall experience. The names are cutely derived from phrases commonly thrown around during the Halloween season.
Bone Daddy is a salted caramel pumpkin latte topped with praline sweet cream. The Candyman Matcha is a white mocha matcha latte topped with candy corn sweet cream.
The Horror’chatta is a pumpkin horchata chai latte topped with a double shot of espresso. The Season of the Witch is a London fog tea made with vanilla and praline-infused Earl Gray tea and topped with steamed milk. The Ghost Rider is a dark chocolate mocha latte topped with candy corn sweet cream.
No matter what drink you choose, your tastebuds will be screaming for more.
